Help Stray Dogs Survive The Cold, Harsh Winter
The temperature keeps dropping day by day and it's just the beginning. According to the weather forecast, people are likely to witness a harsher winter and may see a rise in the frequency of cold waves, especially in North and Central India. If you are an animal lover, you must be worried about your homeless furry friends who are left alone to survive the cold nights of winter.
Well, here are some tips you can follow to help these precious souls.
1. Provide them regularly with fresh food and clean water
Hunger and fear are the only realities in dog life: an empty stomach makes a fierce dog.
— by Robert Falcon Scott
A stray dog living in a society is totally dependent for food on the mercy of residents, who may throw a few pieces of chappatis once in a while.
2. Make Temporary Shelter
Staying on the road on cold nights is not only tough but also dangerous. To provide warmth, safety, and protection, the best thing to do is to find a shelter for the dog in parks or a shed around your house to spend the night.
3. Cover them with coats or jackets
For the dogs living in your vicinity, you can always cover them with jackets or coats which are easily available on the market. However, if your budget does not allow this, old sweaters can also come in handy.
4. Allow them inside your house on a rainy day
Winter and rain is a deadly combination. If it is raining, you can always open your house gates for your furry buddies until the rain stops.
5. Check under your vehicles before starting the engine
Dogs and other small animals often seek shelter under or on the wheel well of your car. So before starting your car, do check and bang on the hood of your vehicle to avoid injuries to the animal.
